Winehouse

"My candle burns at both ends It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends -
It gives a lovely light."

On another note, I hate blogspot, it won't let me upload any pictures. Sigh

Kaleidoscope Eyes

Eugene Andolsek 1921-2008.

Producing 7000 of these kaleidoscopic drawings throughout his lifetime, Eugene, a railroad stenographer (not an artist) would get home every night and sit at his kitchen table for hours on end producing these pieces as a form of escapism away from his boring life.

Created using graph paper, a compass, coloured inks and eye-droppers, once they were finished, he put away his intricate artworks in a trunk. It was only when Eugene got older and needed help at home that these dazzling pieces were discovered and brought to the attention of the Andy Warhol Museum.

These beautiful dazzling pieces remind me of Spanish/Moroccan decorative tiles and mosaics. I'm glad someone found these pieces and gave Eugene the recognition he deserved before he passed away.

These are some of my favourites...

Dreaming of the Med...

I love these Mediterranean patterns from Fired Earth, sitting on my sofa with a cold on a miserable May day makes me wish for tapas, sun, gaudi and spanish decoration this summer.

Ms Lydia Becker's botanical desk

From researching into Manchester Museum's Herbarium, I learnt about Lydia Becker who was one of the first female botanist's who was a suffragette with Emmeline Pankhurst in the 1800's. I've decided to create Lydia Becker's work space, with jars of preserved plants, dried flowers, old ornaments, oil lamp, botanical illustrations and suffragette ribbons and support posters. I think I am going to use these photographs as my final piece, with the possibility of working with my dried flowers and drawing studies from the desk on photoshop. I am pleased with the items I have sourced using an abandoned desk, old desk chair, and oil lamp.

Botanical Herbarium

The mining the museum unit has been inspired by the digitex competition by looking into Manchester Museum's Herbarium. I've decided to look into preserved flowers and Mark Dion's surrealist's office of weird and wonderful objects that you discover in old museums.
